Child Welfare and Family Supports

Ensuring children and their families have the supports, opportunities and resources they need to thrive is the cornerstone of CSSP’s child welfare policy work.

A key component of this work is about making sure children are not separated from their families unless absolutely necessary; and, if children are involved in child welfare systems, they have a permanent family connection and are supported socially and emotionally for healthy development. Guiding this work is a philosophy that recognizes that while government has a critical role in keeping children safe, it requires partnerships with the community, parents and the children and youth it serves in order to address the complicated and unique needs of families. The policy work is focused strongly on the need to improve outcomes for children and families of color involved with the child welfare system.
